My Review
Today, I finished A Game of Lies by Clare Mackintosh, and it was an absolute page-turner! Having thoroughly enjoyed The Last Party, where we were first introduced to DC Ffion Morgan, DC Leo Brady, and the intriguing residents of Cwm Coed, I was eager to dive back into this world.
In A Game of Lies, Ffion and Leo are reunited as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of a contestant from a reality TV show. The Welsh mountains, which are as atmospheric and brooding as ever, have become the backdrop for Exposure – a survival show where seven strangers sign up, expecting a straightforward challenge of endurance. However, they quickly discover that nothing is quite as it seems, and the stakes are much higher than they ever imagined.
Clare Mackintosh has crafted a brilliant follow-up, building on the tension and drama of the first book while introducing new layers of intrigue. The plot twists kept me guessing, and the pacing was spot on, making it hard to put the book down. I found myself even more engrossed in this instalment than in The Last Party, which is saying something given how much I enjoyed that one.
One of the highlights for me was delving deeper into Ffion’s character. Her complex personality, sharp wit, and determination make her a truly compelling protagonist. It was also lovely to see more of her dynamic with Leo and, of course, the star of the book Dave.
Overall, A Game of Lies is a fantastic continuation of the series, blending suspense, character development, and the stunning Welsh setting to great effect. Whether you’re a fan of crime fiction or just looking for a gripping read, this book is not to be missed. I can’t wait to see where Ffion and Leo’s journey takes them next!
