Graveyard Shift and More: An Evening with M. L. Rio in Leeds

Getting my book signed at the M. L. Rio talk in Leeds

Well it has been a week. I thought I wasn’t going to make this talk. Brambles, our 11 year old lab needed to go into the vets for x-rays and CT scans as his back hocks have both really dropped. We found out his ankles are actually in great condition but his elbows are the worst that the orthopedic specialist had ever seen due to his terrible arthritis. He also has hip dysplasia, so his back has dropped due to offloading strain from the front. He is already on plenty of meds but they reviewed them and were able to up them and thankfully he does seem happier in himself now.

After picking him up, my husband kindly dropped me in Leeds so I could attend the M. L. Rio event which was being held at Waterstones in Leeds.

I haven’t read Graveyard Shift yet because I wanted to wait for the talk first, but it sounds weird and right up my street. Plus, it comes with a playlist (Modest Mouse, Interpol etc.) and a cocktail list — basically all my favourite things.

M. L. Rio also chatted a bit about her upcoming book Hot Wax — which, to be honest, sounds even more perfect for me — and about seeing small bands/cheap gigs. I love live music too. When we visited NYC recently, we saw Jon Snodgrass in a dive bar, he played to about 10 people and spent so much time chatting with us. If it had been in the UK, it would have sold out! Such a great experience and vibe.

A special shout out to the person who took photos for everyone getting their books signed. I had so many on my camera roll to choose from!

Anyway! About both books below…

🪦 Graveyard Shift
Every night, in the college’s ancient cemetery, five people cross paths as they work the late shift: a bartender, a rideshare driver, a hotel receptionist, the steward of the derelict church that looms over them, and the editor-in-chief of the college paper, always in search of a story.

One dark October evening in the defunct churchyard, they find a hole that wasn’t there before. A fresh, open grave where no grave should be. But who dug it, and for whom?

Before they go their separate ways, the gravedigger returns. As they trail him through the night, they realize he may be the key to a string of strange happenings around town that have made headlines for the last few weeks–and that they may be closer to the mystery than they thought.

🎸 Hot Wax – out Sept 2025
A nostalgic love-letter to the 90s rock and roll scene, Hot Wax follows a band of rocker misfits, rivals and trailblazers on the tour that could have catapulted them to super-stardom, if it all hadn’t come crashing down
