I had a fantastic evening in York, attending another brilliant book event organised by Criminally Good Books. This time, the guest of honour was none other than the incredible Belinda Bauer, in conversation with the lovely bookseller Cat.
I read Exit when it first published and loved it. My mother-in-law is also a big fan but was sadly on holiday so unable to attend with me. Belinda’s latest novel, The Impossible Thing, sounds utterly fascinating, unlike anything I’ve read before and I can’t wait to get stuck in.
Getting There – A Trip to York with Daisy
I made my way into York on the train, bringing Daisy along for the adventure. We stopped off at Spark. If you’ve never been, it’s a fantastic space made from upcycled shipping containers which packed with great independent food vendors. Most importantly, it’s dog friendly and a short walk from Criminally Good Books! After refuelling, we headed over to the venue for the main event.
It was so nice to be able to bring Daisy with me, as she waits and looks for me if I go out without her! She was super well behaved and loved all the attention.
Belinda Bauer in Conversation
Belinda was as engaging in person as she is on the page. She spoke about how a piece she heard on the radio went on to inspire The Impossible Thing. I picked up a gorgeous independent bookshop edition with red sprayed edges along with a copy of Rubbernecker. I have the ebook of this but wanted a physical and anyone who has read it will recognise the character Patrick, who makes a return in The Impossible Thing.
About The Impossible Thing
It was the greatest mystery never told . . .
1926. On the towering cliffs of Yorkshire, men are lowered on ropes to steal the eggs of the sea birds who nest there. The most beautiful are sold for large sums. But when small and hungry Celie Sheppard finds an ‘impossible’ red egg, it will forever alter the course of her life – and the lives of others.
One hundred years later in a remote cottage in Wales, Patrick Fort discovers his friend, Nick, and his mother tied up and robbed. The only thing missing: a carved case containing an incredible scarlet egg. Doggedly attempting to retrieve it, Patrick and Nick discover the cruel world of egg trafficking, and soon find themselves on the trail of a priceless collection of eggs lost to history. Until now.
The Impossible Thing is out now. Buy it from your local indie ♥️
