Grady Hendrix at Waterstones Nottingham

What a day! It all began with Yorkshire Reads friend Becca arriving in Harrogate. From there, we headed to the train station and made our way to Nottingham via a change in Leeds. We arrived just after 1pm, which gave us time to grab some food before heading over to Waterstones.

This was my first time attending an event at Waterstones Nottingham, and I was really impressed  – they have a dedicated events room, so daytime events can run without disrupting the rest of the shop. We joined the queue and managed to get second-row seats!

The event itself was absolutely phenomenal. I’ve genuinely never experienced anything like it. I even told Grady that he’s ruined all future events for me – nothing will compare! I mentioned I’m a big Chuck Palahniuk fan and while I’ve not been lucky enough to see him live (please come back to the UK!), this felt like what I imagine one of his tours would be like –  totally unique. Grady said David Sedaris offers a similar vibe, so I’ll definitely be checking him out too.

The event was all about witches, packed with detail and brilliant references to old-school books, TV shows and films. It was absolutely hilarious – I was crying with laughter at points. There was also a truly special moment towards the end that made it even more unforgettable. We were allowed to take photos during the event, but no videos, so I won’t spoil too much here either! If you have the chance to catch one of the remaining tour dates, do it! (All dates are sold out except St Andrews on the 7th—[tour info here]).

Although there wasn’t a Q&A, Grady was incredibly generous with his time. The signing was organised by row and we were allowed up to three books each – though anyone with more was welcome to rejoin the queue at the end if there was time. Books were stamped, signed, inscribed and Grady made time to chat and take photos with everyone.

Honestly, it was such an amazing day. We spent over six hours travelling in total, but it was 100% worth it!
