My Review

Dev and Merri are happily married but having to tighten the purse strings. So when Dev splurges £20 on a luxury house draw raffle ticket as an anniversary present for Merri, she’s more stressed than impressed. But just days later, a knock at the door brings a camera crew and life-changing news: they’ve only won the house, plus £250,000!

This means they can leave their old cash strapped lives in Nottingham behind to start afresh in the Lake District. Though why is Merri acting so shifty about the photographs and media presence that come part and parcel with their win?

As they move, more cracks begin to show. It wouldn’t be a thriller without a secret or two and we learn that Merri is hiding a big one from Dev. The story unfolds through three perspectives: the present day, the events of sixteen years ago and the chilling voice of an unknown Watcher. However, I did find their identity quite easy to guess.

My favourite elements of The Lucky Winners were definitely those relating to the house, the raffle company and the tension with the locals. I like it when we get thrillers rooted in believable, every day situations and these are still such relevant hot topics right now: those born and bred locally being priced out, houses not in keeping with the area and the rise of Airbnb/second homes destroying communities.

Thanks to Penguin Michael Joseph and NetGalley for the ARC.
