My Review
What an absolutely outstanding police procedural thriller series. You may have seen from my Human Remains and Body of Lies reviews that I have completely read in the wrong order. I picked up at Human Remains and had to know what happened at the end, so I dived straight into Body of Lies when I was lucky enough to receive an ARC. I’m now back at the start. Don’t do this. Please invest your time in this wonderful series. It is so unique. It will be sad to see it come to an end in 2026 but fans should be satisfied with the ending and what a journey!
I think this one will be my favourite in the series. I was in the crowd when Jo won the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year for this in 2024. Her speech was so wonderful yet sad due to the circumstances within the Acknowledgements at the end of the book. Please make sure you read this. It must have taken a lot to write this one.
This is one of the best debuts I have ever read. I put it off for so long due to the AI element. Although that’s a huge unique spin on the genre, I didn’t even really notice Lock in this one, which is remarkable considering at one point he appears as Pikachu! Kat, Hassan and Browne absolutely shine through with their strong personalities, a moment from my favourite Kat line: “You are not my fucking Fitbit“. The crime at the centre of this when all is revealed regarding the missing university students is a standout plot that I won’t forget.
I honestly think this series will stand the test of time and continue to be discussed and recommended as part of the crime fiction canon.
