My Review

As you might have gathered from this photo, I’m a huge fan of Janice Hallett’s work and have eagerly devoured everything she’s written so far. Her knack for delivering unexpected twists and keeping readers intrigued is simply unparalleled – I didn’t see any of these twists coming!

The Examiner is structured in a way that will feel familiar to fans of her debut novel, The Appeal. The story begins with a group of external examiners evaluating a new Arts MA course. They review not only the students’ written assessments but also their online communications, including emails, diary blogs, message board posts, and WhatsApp messages. Through these, they begin to suspect that one of the students might have gone missing during the course…

The characters are, as always, richly developed, and the book combines humour with an incredibly well-paced narrative that delves into darker themes than usual. I absolutely loved it.

A big thank you to Viper Books and NetGalley for the ARC. Now I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of my pre-ordered signed hardback!

The Examiner releases on 29th August 2024 and is available to pre-order now. Be sure to check with your local indie bookstore!

[…] Published: 29th August 2024Format: Articles, tests, written exchangesThis one felt a little darker to me – and I loved it for that. The tone, the pace, the twists – everything just landed perfectly. The story centres around an enigmatic educational programme and the people caught up in its secrets. The layers unfold through exam papers, memos, and assessments, drawing the reader into something far more sinister than it first appears. Read my review here […]
