My Review

Wow – what a book. I had seen a lot of praise for this online and couldn’t resist picking up a signed hardback copy from my local independent bookstore, Imagined Things.

I’m currently away camping in Scotland, doing the NC500, so I read the ebook on my Kobo. Since the covers appear smaller, I missed the scene-setting tagline and went into this blind.

The book opens with a flashback to Spring 2004, where we meet Tobias and Evelyn Moore. They’ve been together for six years, happily married for three, and are expecting their first child. They’re infatuated with one another and their relationship is incredibly loving.

We then jump forward twenty years to the summer of 2024. Tobias and Evelyn are still together, but something devastating has happened in the intervening years. Tragically, when their son Joshua was just nine years old, he was killed in a road accident caused by a man named Aaron Alexander.

Aaron has served his prison sentence and was released a month ago. We learn that Evelyn has been waiting for this day throughout his imprisonment and has a plan to exact her own justice. She wants an eye for an eye and won’t stop until Aaron is dead.

It’s heartbreaking to witness the drastic change in Tobias and Evelyn’s relationship. As the story unfolds, we learn much more about all three main characters, their history and what has driven them to act as they do. The book masterfully shows that nothing is simply black and white. Aaron isn’t just a killer and Evelyn isn’t entirely innocent. I found the story both captivating and beautifully told. The way the characters develop throughout their journey is harrowing yet profound.

As I get older, I’m finding my memory isn’t what it used to be, but this is a book that will stick with me. Hopefully, my family hasn’t stumbled upon this site yet because this book is definitely going to be bought and gifted at every opportunity!
