My Review

Ever since I discovered The Appeal a couple of months after its release, I’ve devoured everything Hallett has written the moment it hits the shelves. So I was absolutely thrilled to receive a proof of her latest book, The Killer Question.

True to Hallett’s signature style, the story is told entirely through mixed media – there’s no traditional narration here. Instead, the plot unfolds via WhatsApp group chats, TripAdvisor reviews, posters, text messages, emails and statements. It’s a format she handles masterfully, and once again, it pulls you straight into the heart of the mystery. The reason why I am such a big fan of mixed media is because to me it embodies what reading should be: fun, engaging and  accessible.

This time, pub culture and the world of quizzing take centre stage and they lend themselves perfectly to the format. While the mystery unravels, there’s something heartwarming about watching a community come together each week. True cosy crime! One quiz team, composed of younger members, even admits they show up more for the digital detox and time with friends as opposed to serious quizzing – a sentiment that feels both relatable and refreshing. With fewer young people embracing the traditional pub scene these days, it was lovely to read about one that’s alive and thriving.

There’s a great line in the book as the pubs are being introduced: “The Lusty Lass can be seen in an episode of Most Haunted from March 2004.” It instantly brought to mind the Golden Fleece in York – full of creaky floorboards, ghost stories, atmosphere and of course it’s memorabilia from appearing on said show! Honestly, give me a patterned carpet, some intricate old barwork, a roaring fireplace and a pub dog and I’m in heaven!

Anyone who has had Hallett’s previous work will know to expect a few twists along the way as the story unfolds. The Killer Question is no different and there is some information we are given that I knew must be important. But it couldn’t be that easy, could it? And whilst it was pertinent, it’s never that simple. The plot is layered, clever and constantly shifting. I’ll resist the urge to say more – half the joy is in discovering it all for yourself.

I will say, though: you absolutely need to add The Killer Question to your TBR. Get those pre-orders in. Visit your local independent bookshop in September and make sure to pick this one up! Hallett’s work is as strong as ever. And if The Killer Question is – is this Hallett’s best work yet? – then the answer is a resounding yes.

Thank you to Viper Books for sending me a proof and The Killer Question goodie box in exchange for an honest review.
