My Review

This is the second book in the Detective Liz Field series, following on from Brennan’s 2025 debut, No Safe Place, my review of that can be found here.

Both books feature intriguing premises. They can be read as standalones, but the second does reference the case from the first, so it’s worth reading both.

Anne Evans was deemed a ‘nuisance caller’ due to her repetitive panicked 999 calls fearing her house was about to be burnt down. Until one day it does, with Anne trapped inside. Is it really paranoia, if all that you feared comes true?

As with her debut, Brennan handles the dark subject matter and complex characters very sensitively.

I did find it took me a little while for me to get back into the rhythm, which I think is something I can experience with police procedurals. It’s a genre that usually involves a lot of characters to keep track of, I mean it is a whole police force, after all! This time there is the addition of the firefighters too. Likewise the nature of the genre and investigation do make for a slight slow burn.

Those who love police procedurals that feature intriguing hooks and strong characters and also want to support emerging authors, you wouldn’t go far wrong picking up a copy.

Thank you to Avon for the ARC and to Random Things Tours for including me on the blog tour.
