My Review

It’s early morning on the Isle of Wight when a shot is heard ringing out from a small harbourside café. The police attend but no one inside is making contact with the outside and the landline has been unplugged.

What follows is a race to uncover the identity of who may be inside. It takes the police a while to discover who each of the five people are, which is just part of the task. The critical part is figuring out which of the five is responsible. Who is the hostage taker, and what has driven them to do so this morning?

I enjoyed how the situation forced each of the five’s family and friends to take stock and assess whether their loved one could be responsible for the heinous situation. The action is slow-paced as the narrative focuses on the people themselves, and we get to read from multiple points of view as secrets about each of the involved start to emerge.

This was the first novel I’ve read by Perks and it won’t be the last.
