My Review

At Sunnyside Home for the Young at Heart, caregiver Belinda finds herself crossing paths with resident and owner, Mabel.

The women spend a lot of time chatting and boy do they have some interesting stories to trade! Fifteen years ago Brenda was convicted of her husband’s murder, whilst Mabel originally came to the house as an evacuee during the Blitz.

The timeline alternates between the present day and the past and from both of their points of view as they regale each other with their tales. I loved the effect this had on how chapters ended, with Mabel and Belinda both urging the other to resume their stories, desperate to find out what happened next: “‘If we’re going to jump ahead,’ she says, please tell me if….’ ‘No – it’s your turn! … What happened next?’“

Aside from the duo, we learn that a secretive individual is observing Mabel, hence where the title comes in, there’s a stranger in room six! Mabel has something they want and they’ll stop at no lengths to find it…

An enjoyable mystery with a great dynamic between the two main characters.
