My Review
Fans of the 2022 Goodreads Choice Awards “Best Horror” winner Hidden Pictures will rejoice as Rekulak rejoins forces with illustrators Will Staehle and Doogie Horner to bring Look What the Cat Dragged In to life.
Penny is the successful cartoonist behind the ‘Penny and Popcorn’ series, which her editor Tarquin would describe as “Garfield meets Gilmore Girls, with a tiny hint of Stranger Things”. Penny however, is quick to rebuke the Stranger Things claim. And whilst her comic is nothing like that, Look What the Cat Dragged In definitely has those vibes!
Popcorn, Penny’s cat which inspired the titular comic, goes missing during a blizzard. Penny is bereft and loses her creative spark. After a couple of cat-less weeks, her boyfriend manages to convince her to catsit for his client. Maybe Godfrey, their new feline friend, can help reignite Penny’s passion for drawing so she can crack on with the fourth Penny and Popcorn book. Only, like in Hidden Pictures it’s not long before Penny’s cute, simplistic cartoon art takes on a whole new darkness, in a style Penny never imagined herself capable of drawing.
This is a fun, supernatural horror that’s perfect reading for the season! I especially loved the addition of the illustrations, as not only do they help tell the story, they amplify the atmosphere and you’ll be anxious to see what appears in them next! It’s not quite as twisty as Hidden Pictures, the reveals are steady away, but the journey is absolutely one worth taking and I was a big fan of the ending!
Thank you to Little, Brown Book Group for sending me a finished copy of the book to review.
